Confession: I am obsessed with Ugly Betty.
One of my new obsessions, now that I have some free time, is watching TV series on DVD. This week I finished Ugly Betty, and I am convinced it is probably one of the best shows ever written. Maybe it's because I'm a sap and I love the sassy fashion dialogue (sometimes I feel like one of my friends and I are Amanda and Mark), but more than that, I love it because Betty has inspired me.
Yes, I did tear up every other episode.
Yes, the plots are sometimes ridiculous.
BUT I learned a lot from Miss Suarez and co. Just because somewhere isn't exactly where you want to be or you're not doing exactly what you want to be doing doesn't mean you can't make the best of it. The drama that goes on at Meade makes just about any other workplace drama look like nothing. But what does Betty do? She tries her best to fix it. Do they always listen to her? No. But that doesn't mean she stops trying. She looks for the best in these crazy situations and tries to see past them to how they will affect her career.
But just because she's not exactly where she wants to be doesn't mean Betty gets stuck either. She works to take on more responsibility and keep training to do what she ultimately wants to do. And while it takes till the series finale to get there, she does! There might not be a YETI program for me to join and my current workplace is no Mode magazine, but I guess that means I just need to get creative. And update my blog more. Betty blogs so she can do what she really wants. I'm still figuring that out, but I guess this could be the same thing for me, too.
Betty Suarez inspires me because I think in so many ways, we are the same. We might not be exactly where we want to be, but we have a lot of potential. It will just take some more creativity. We're not stuck, and we're definitely going some place great.
